Periscope Athens
Overview
High above Athens' most opulent shopping district, Periscope Hotel is an intimate urban hub of contemporary art and sightseeing, with a perfect view of the city. Bold design objects range from desks with fold-away mirrors to panoramic shots of Athens suspended from the ceiling. Guestrooms feature interesting design touches, such as sandblasted glass doors, while in the fourth- and fifth-floor junior suites, panoramic shots of Athens by day and night hang from ceiling beams made from radiant light boxes. Modern art is juxtaposed with mechanized installations throughout this 1950s-era industrial concrete structure. The notion of watching people and collecting information runs through the core of the Periscope, which was commissioned between 9/11 and the 2004 Athens Olympics—a time when CCTV cameras and surveillance drones began to speckle the urban landscape. All around the industrial-looking concrete structure, you’ll see modern works of art blended with interactive, mechanized installations.
